I took this picture this past summer, while attending a Philadelphia Phillies baseball game. I was there as a spectator, not a photographer, but did bring a camera to take some fun shots. There were a group of young Phillies “Phans” a few rows in front of me, who were very enthusiastic about cheering for their favorite team.

The phan in the picture had just caught a ball thrown to her by one of the players. She was looking over her shoulder towards her dad to show him the ball, when I snapped this photo. Her wild pig tails, vibrant face paint and joyful smile was the trifecia of photogenic cuteness. Now, the image would be greatly improved if I could have gotten her to look at the camera. But, it is still a cute photograph. I shot the photo with my Canon 7D with a 70-300mm lens. I used a local length of 155mm, 1/250 of a second at f5, with a 500 ISO.

This is an example of the types of photos I take when I attend a sporting event as a spectator. When shooting from the stands with minimal equipment, you do not have the physical access or gear at your disposal to capture “Sport Illustrated” quality action shots of the game. So, instead of coming home with only sub-par images, I use a bit of creativity to capture the stories that are unfolding closer to me.

I hope you enjoyed the photo and its story. I look forward to sharing another photo next week.

Photo of the Week: Monet

I took this picture last fall, while in New York City for business. I had time to kill one night by myself, so I visited the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) during one one of their “after dark” events, where the museum stays open late. I roamed around by myself with my headphones on, listening to trippy music (old Porcupine Tree, to be exact) and experiencing the artwork. It was a memorable evening… just one of those peaceful moments in life where everything just feels right.

The photo is of Monet’s Water Lillies, as displayed in MoMa. Water Lilies is displayed in a room solely dedicated to viewing this historic masterpiece. I used a 15mm fish eye lens on my Canon 7d to capture the entire room – conveying the size and magnitude of the painting (Note: the cropping of the smaller sensor on the 7D helps to subdue the fish eye effect). I wanted to capture the peaceful solitude of Monet, so I camped out in the room, waiting for a clear shot without intruders. At the last minute someone walked into the frame, providing the silhouette to the right. It was not my intention to have a person in the image. However, it added another dimension to the photo. The person adds a “story” to the picture: the story of a spectator experiencing art. It also provides further perceptive, showing the size of the painting in comparison to a person.

Another aspect of the photo that I love is the lines of the hardwood floors, as it brings movement to the photo. The lines on the floor run parallel to the painting, also providing symmetry to the photo.

I hope you enjoyed the photo and its story. I look forward to sharing another photo next week.

New Web Site!

As you can tell – the new web site is up and active! I am still working on little issues and bugs here are there. But I am happy to have it up and running. This layout is more clean and lends itself beautifully to displaying my all mediums in my portfolio, not just my photography.

For the web geeks that may be reading: This site is built with WordPress, as my previous site was built with Joomla. WordPress has come a long way since I first played with it in 2008. I found great templates for clean designs, as well as good plugins for image galleries, search engine optimization & social networking. Well written plugins and templates were lacking years ago, limiting WordPress’ functionality solely to providing simple blog sites. I am still looking at better options for presentation of my portfolio on a mobile site. But, overall I am very happy with the new WordPress site.

New Site Coming Soon

I apologize for the lack of activity on my website. I am in the process of creating a new site, so all of my “web energy” has been focused on finishing the new site. Look for it to launch in a couple of weeks. It looks great so far! I cannot wait everyone to see it.

Also, I have some new business cards on order, as shown above. Recently, I have parted ways with Diamond Thunderbolt Studios and will be continuing my web development, video production & photography through my own company “Digital Bath Media.” The cards and website will be the first steps in launching my new “branding.” After a difficult 2010, I am relieved and excited to be in total control of my creative and business ventures! One of my current projects includes developing an online store for Party Yards Inc.
